A polished marble floor, free of surface scratching — a Singapore home
Because polished marble's shine is the surface finish itself, any scratch that cuts into that surface removes the gloss right where it cuts — which is why even a fine scratch on marble is far more visible than the same mark on a duller floor.
Very fine, shallow surface scratches can sometimes be honed out with a fine-grit diamond pad and re-polished without needing a full grind. Deeper scratches — the kind you can feel with a fingernail — need coarser diamond grinding first to level the surrounding surface evenly, otherwise honing alone leaves a visible dip where the scratch was.
Consumer marble polish and buffing pads can improve very light surface dulling, but they can't remove material the way a diamond grinding disc does. Using the wrong grit, or trying to spot-treat just the scratched area, often leaves a patch with a different sheen level to the surrounding floor — more noticeable than the original scratch.
Use felt pads under furniture legs, a doormat at entrances to catch grit before it reaches the marble, and trim pets' nails regularly. None of this eliminates the need for periodic re-polishing on a well-used floor, but it slows how quickly the shine wears down.
